making biltong ( beef jerky )

AIM:  I would like to produce biltong

METHOD: The equipment that we needed to make biltong was....

salt and spices , Raw meat , string , news paper / scrap paper , sharp knife ( make sure and adult is in guidence )

INSTRUCTION FOR MAKING BILTONG

1. cut the raw meat in to strips about 1 - 2 cm wide.
2 cut the strips of meat on a piece of scrap paper or news paper.3.
grab a pinch of salt and spices mixed together.
4. then pour that salt and spices on to the meat and massage your salt and spices into the meat.
5. and do it about three times then grab some string and wrap the string around three times.
6. tie it up and grab glue out and glue a stick a piece of paper on to the string and label it.
7. hang the meat up and let it sit for one week make sure it is were air is allowing to come it.

so if you are looking at this please follow the instructions and this is one quick task of making biltong and guarenteed  that it will be so yum BUT BE WARNED, IF YOUR BILTONG IS SOFT DO NOT EAT IT, IT IS A WARNING THAT YOUR BILTONG IS RAW SO JUST BE WARNED...

making ginger beer

I need:

Water, Ginger, Lemon Juice, Sugar, Yeast

Combine:

  1. 600 ml water (cold or room temp - if its hot you'll cook and kill your yeast)
  2. 1 tsp yeast
  3. Ginger juice
  4. 10 tsp Sugar - Provides food for the yeast to use and multiply
  5. juice of 2 lemons - provides an acidic environment that helps prevent other bacteria from taking over.
  6. Stir all of this in the jar, cover the jar with some fabric or a paper towel and place jar in a warm area
  7. Everyday for the next week feed your yeast with ginger powder and 3 tsp sugar and stir in.
  8. After a week, pour the ginger beer through cheese cloth and drink.

What is that stuff at the bottom?
When I looked at the bottle, I noticed gross floating stuff  at the bottom of my bottle. That is the yeast growing as it eats the sugar of my ginger beer .

What does it smell like?
When I took the lid off and smelled the liquid, there is a strong smell of ginger combined with soy sauce and real beer but stale

What does it taste like?
When I tasted the drink , it left a fresh sting of ginger on my tongue. The ginger makes it spicy. The yeast has eaten all the sugar so it does not taste too sweet that we threw up

What happens if you shake it?
When I shook the bottle, it started to fizz. This is Carbon dioxide it is a gas that will fizz your ginger beer
Discussion:

What is yeast?  yeast is a living creature that snacks on sugar
What did the yeast do in the Ginger Beer?    not sure
What are some other good uses of Yeast?  to make beer
What are some other bad uses of Yeast?    to leave the yeast in ginger beer and drink it
What are some interesting questions that I would like to find out about this experiment?  how the yeast moves around.

    How the Earth was made

youtube clip of how the Earth was made

    • If the oldest rocks came from space that is were they will start
Image result for oldest rocks from space

    • 4 and a half billion years ago the sun was surround by a cloud of dust.
     cloud of dust
    • As the cloud dust cooled little grains and minerals formed.
    • The minerals begins to clump together.
    • All clumped together by static electricity.

    • If the rocks hit each other they connect to each other and makes a star that has not formed properly.
    • After 30 million years ago the Earth finally formed to its self like here we are now.

Did you know : The gravity pulls you in not up or down.

The bigger the object grows the faster the object goes through space.

Did you know : the Earth has 3 layers same to an apple accept different layers but core is the same.
Then the earth melted in to a big ball of lava.

    govhttp://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_931.html

All the metals sank and all the rocks floated.

    • How does the earth dry?  do you know chocolate wizz that hardens after the heating on your ice cream the earth cooled and made the earth before the water and life !!!!!.
    • In 1974 more planets came to be.
    • people say another planet about the size of mar's crashed into the earth.
    • the Moon formed when another planet crashed into the earth.
    • All the rocks blown into space collected together to make the moon.
    • Oceans were around basically when the Earth was born.
    • water existed in space when the Earth was born.

    • each rock in Space contains at least a drop of Ocean.
    • every time a meteorite hits the forming Earth it grows the Ocean water.
    • with out life the Earth wont be like it today.
    • a piece of the meteorite contained acids life cant exist with out them.
    • Amino Acids are attracted together.
    • the bacteria breathed out a gas call oxygen

    hands on fire.

Aim: I want to safely set my hands on fire

    equipment: safety goggles ,box,water,hose,detergent,lighter.

Method: 1.to be safe, were your safety goggles, roll your sleeves or take your jersey off.
    2. wet your hands wrist and arms up to your elbow.
    3. get a scoop of bubbles.
    4. move away from the box.
    5. hold the bubbles at eye level as far away from my body and face as you can.
    6. To put out the fire slowly open your hands

fun great and most fun one yet one tip though don't leave the fire in your hands to long or ouch.

    Burning Magnesium

Aim : I want to find out what happens to Magnesium when I burn it.

Hypothesis: I predict that it will turn black and tiny bit not too much melt but not so much.

Method:  1. Get equipment   2. safety goggles  3. put down the heat mat   4. connect the Bunsen burner to the gas tap.    5.  Close the air hole.  6. Ignite the lighter.  7.  Turn on the gas.  8. Open the air hole.  9.  Hold the Magnesium in the scissor tongs.  10. Put the Magnesium  in to the blue flame.  11. observe  What happens.

Variables: Equipment: heat mat , Bunsen burner , Scissor tongs , Magnesium , Lighter ,  Safety goggles

When I burned solid shiny grey magnesium on the Bunsen burner  it formed a bright white light and lasted for 2 - 3 seconds. Then it flashed out. Some sort of white powder was left behind.

    Reaction

When magnesium is in its metal form it will burn very easily in air. However, in order to start the reaction (the burning) the magnesium metal needs a source of energy. The flame provides a source of heat so that the magnesium metal atoms can overcome their activation energy. Activation energy is the minimum energy required in order for a chemical reaction to proceed. When the magnesium metal burns it reacts with oxygen found in the air to form Magnesium Oxide. A compound is a material in which atoms of different elements are bonded to one another. Oxygen and magnesium combine in a chemical reaction to form this compound. After it burns, it forms a white powder of the magnesium oxide. Magnesium gives up two electrons to oxygen atoms to form this powdery product. This is an exothermic reaction. An exothermic reaction is a term that describes a chemical reaction in which there is a net release of energy (heat).
    (1)2Mg(s)+O2(g)2MgO(s)+energy

Magnesium is also capable of reducing water to the highly-flammable hydrogen gas, which will be ignited by the excess heat given by the reduction reaction.
    (2)Mg(s)+2H2OMg(OH)2(s)+H2(g)

Magnesium also reacts with carbon dioxide to form magnesium oxide and carbon:
    (3)Mg(s)+CO22MgO(s)+C(s)

Hence, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers cannot be used for extinguishing magnesium fires either. Burning magnesium is usually quenched by using a Class D dry chemical fire extinguisher, or by covering the fire with sand to remove its air source.

Evaluation: other experiments related to this I could do are :
. does all metal burn brightly . how could magnesium burn so quick .why does magnesium burn  with gas.

    Results: up above in red.
    Discussion:

conclusion: My  hypothesis was that it will turn tiny or melt in to a bunch  of metal I hope you enjoyed my magnesium report. :)
